2,500 policemen will guard the JNI Stadium

Kochi, More than 2,500 policemen, including 100 commandos, will guard the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium here when it hosts the first one-day cricket match between India and Australia Oct 17.
Inspector General of Police B. Sandhya said after visiting the stadium that the security cover would be foolproof. The stadium will be inspected by dog and bomb squads daily, he said. Thirty-two closed circuit cameras have been installed in the stadium, the only one that hosts international cricket matches in Kerala. It was recently refurbished at a cost of Rs.10 crore. The stadium, with a capacity for 50,000, has got a new turf, a new cover over the stands and new chairs. The Australian team is arriving Oct 14. Both the teams would stay at the Taj
Malabar Hotel near here. A total of 50 commandos would be deployed for the security of the two
teams. More commandos will be at the stadium. The Oct 17 match will be the third India-Australia clash here. Officials said ticket sales were picking up. On Monday alone, tickets worth Rs.30 lakh were sold.
